Beijing Sport University was approved for the establishment of undergraduate courses in sports rehabilitation and physical therapy in 2004, and it began to enroll new students formally in 2005, becoming the first group of higher learning institutions enrolling students studying sports rehabilitation and physical therapy in our country. In April 2008, it was approved by General Administration of Sport of China for the establishment of the Sports Rehabilitation Department, it was renamed the School of Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation in June 2017, and the discipline was renamed sports rehabilitation in 2012. In the cultivation of graduate students, it added a master’s program for rehabilitation medicine and physiotherapy in 2006 to the original master’s program for sport science (sports health care) and doctor’s program for sport science; it had a master’s program for clinical medicine (the first class discipline) in 2010; it added a master’s program and a doctor’s program for sports rehabilitation in 2016; and it added a master’s program for sport medicine under the discipline of clinical medicine in 2019. Now, it has 570 undergraduates and 171 graduate students.

There are the Teaching and Research Section of Sport Medicine, the Teaching and Research Section of Sports Rehabilitation, Sports Rehabilitation Center, Physiotherapy Centre and the School Office under the School.

The School has a faculty of 29 people including18 teachers, 3 counselors, 5 laboratory technicians, one attending doctor and 2 administrative people. Among the teachers are 8 professors, one researcher, 4 associate professors, 4 lecturers and one assistant. It has 6 doctoral student supervisors and 10 graduate student supervisors. 15 teachers gained the authentication of professional qualification for teachers from the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT). Professor Wang Anli and Professor Gao Qi were chosen as the “prominent teacher in Beijing” in 2010 and 2015 respectively; professor Lu Yifan enjoyed the special allowance given by the State Council; professor Qian Jinghua won the title of “exemplary model (pioneer) for teacher’s ethics in Beijing" in 2016 and was chosen as a “young prominent teacher in Beijing” in 2017; Gao Qi and Qian Jinghua have been included in the “one hundred people program of the General Administration of Sport of China for outstanding young and middle-aged technical talents”.

The Sports Rehabilitation Center and Physiotherapy Centre have the internationally advanced and domestically first-class teaching, laboratory and scientific research instruments and equipment for sports rehabilitation and prevention and treatment of sports injury, guaranteeing the students make improvement in their practice ability and scientific research level. The School has set up practice bases in No. 1 Hospital of Peking University, No. 3 Hospital of Peking University, the General Hospital of Chinese People's Liberation Army, Sports Hospital of General Administration of Sport of China, Rehabilitation Center of the Training Bureau of General Administration of Sport of China, Zhongguancun Hospital, Beijing DCN Orthopedic Hospital, and the National Team Training Base of BSU, providing abundant opportunities for developing the professional quality of the students.

The School of Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation now has a state-level premium course----Sport Medicine, a state-level bilingual demonstration course---Bilingual Course of Sport Medicine, a state-level virtual simulation experiment project---Winter Sports Protection, premium courses of BSU and several MOOC courses. In the cultivation of students, the School embraces the idea of “laying a solid foundation and focusing on skills", and puts emphasis on the combination of modern rehabilitation techniques and traditional rehabilitation means, the impartment of the latest theories and rehabilitation techniques at home and abroad and the combination of theory and practice. We shows an obvious advantage in the teaching of core courses including rehabilitation evaluation, rehabilitation of muscles and bones, sport rehabilitation of chronic diseases. In the national skill contest of sport rehabilitation students, the students of our school won the first place as a team in the sport rehabilitation group and the first place as a team in the physical treatment group, the first place in the single category of rehabilitation of muscles and bones of the physical treatment group, the first place in the single category of sport rehabilitation of muscles and bones of the sport rehabilitation group, and the first place in the single category of sport rehabilitation of chronic diseases.

In 2009, our school was successfully approved to become the “Trial Zone for Innovated Models for Training Talents in Sport Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy in Beijing”; the Exploration and Practice of Operational Model by Combining ‘Production, Teaching and Research’ in BSU’s Sport Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy obtained the first prize in the teaching achievements for the year of 2009 given by General Administration of Sport of China. Our Sport Rehabilitation Experiment and Teaching Center (Sport Rehabilitation Center and Physiotherapy Center) was chosen as the “Experiment and Teaching Demonstration Center of Beijing” in 2015. Our school’s inter-discipline of sport rehabilitation medicine was rated as the high-grade premium cutting-edge discipline in Beijing, and the specialty of sport rehabilitation was approved to be national-level first-class specialty in 2019. The teachers and students of our school participated in several key scientific and technological projects of the Olympic Games, making contributions to the excellent performance of the Olympic athletes of our country. They also obtained the national second prize for progress in science and technology, the first/second/third prize for key scientific and technological projects of the Olympic Games, and the award for outstanding contributions.

The specialty of sport rehabilitation has been included into the international exchange project for outstanding undergraduate students by CSC. 10 undergraduate students went to NSA of Bulgaria for study and 11 graduate students went to Charles University in Prague for study in 2018; 8 undergraduate students and 4 graduate students went to Charles University in Prague for study, and still 8 graduate students went to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for study in 2019. In addition, our school established friendly cooperation relations with University of North Carolina, Purdue University, Indiana University, Cornell University (Ithaca), University of Southern California, University of Southern Denmark and ULisboa, thus promoting our international influence of our school.

Our school supplies all kinds of talents for various sports schools, departments, sports teams at all levels, research institutions and hospitals at all levels, thus making important contributions to the development of sport medicine and sports rehabilitation in our country.
