School of Art

The predecessor of the School of Art was the Department of Physical Education and Art of Beijing Sport University. BSU was approved by the Ministry of Education and the General Administration of Sport of China to set up the major of Performance in December 2003; BSU enrolled the first batch of undergraduate students majoring in Performance nationwide in 2004; the Department of Physical Education and Art was established at BSU in February 2005; BSU enrolled the first batch of students majoring in Dance Performance in 2013; BSU was approved to grant the degree of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 2014; the Department of Physical Education and Art was officially renamed the School of Art of BSU (hereinafter referred to as the School) in May 2017.


In response to the national strategic requirements on acceleration of the building of a country strong on sports and good preparation for the Beijing Winter Olympics put forward in the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the School worked closely with the Chinese Figure Skating Association to begin to enroll undergraduates in the Experimental Class of Ice Dance (Major of Dance Performance) in 2018 and provide the “2+2” international training program to train outstanding talents for figure skating and ice dance sports in China. It also enrolls excellent students of Rhythmic Gymnastics (Major of Sports Training) for joint training with Russian State-run Sports University, and strives to improve the international competitiveness and influence of Chinese rhythmic gymnastics sports. In 2019, it enrolled the first batch of undergraduates of the Dance major and the Experimental Class of Dance Creation nationwide.


I. Faculty


The School has three teaching and research offices for Aerobic Gymnastics, Sports Dance, and Rhythmic Gymnastics, and two research centers for Sports Art and Dance Science. There are now 3 doctoral supervisors and 14 master’s supervisors, as well as 43 full-time teachers including 8 doctors, 39 masters, 5 professors and 15 associate professors. There are several world champions and Asian champions of international level among the young teachers. The faculty members are passionate in their jobs with complete professional competence, reasonable configuration structure and excellent business capability, many of whom have the experience of overseas study and exchange. They can closely follow the international trend of artistic talent training and integrate advanced concepts and cultivation into classroom teaching.


II. International talent training


The School has actively expanded the platform for international exchange, study and practice, and made joint training cooperation programs with the universities in the U.S., Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Ireland and other countries. Funded by the state and BSU, several graduate students are studying in foreign universities. Some undergraduates went to the U.S., Russia, South Korea, Singapore and countries and regions in Africa several times for performance together with the leaders of the CPC and the state.


III. Achievements of teachers and students


In order to build itself into “a distinctive and high-level art academy with international influence”, the School adheres to the educational philosophy of “achieving distinctive sports with the advantages of art”, actively learns from peer colleges, and gives full play to its own advantages to intently explore specialty construction and talent training for continuous reform and innovation in terms of teaching, training, scientific research, social services and cultural inheritance and achieve excellent results with good social response.


Teachers Sui Jianshuang and Chou Tao of the School won the silver medal for the collective all-around competition of rhythmic gymnastics in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2010, teachers Shen Hong and Liang Yujie won the 999th and 1,000th gold medals in Chinese history of the Asian Games. In addition, the teachers and students of the School successively won the gold medals in the Asian Sports Dance Championship, the finals of the Aerobic Gymnastics World Cup, the World Championship for College Students’ Aerobic Gymnastics, the Championship of Aerobic Gymnastics and Sports Dance for National Sports Colleges, the Art Exhibition of National Sports Colleges, and the dance competitions at home and abroad.


Teachers and students of the School have actively participated in social practice and services, including the performance in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games, the “Youth China” phalanx at the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, the mass celebration center for the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, the 2012 Teacher's Day Party on CCTV-1, and the 2018 First Spring Festival Gala of Sports, as well as the services in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2015 World Athletics Championships and the activities in the 2019 Asian Civilization Dialogue Conference and other major events. A number of provincial and ministerial-level awards have been won successively, including the “Advanced Collective” of Beijing, the “Excellent Volunteer Team”, and the “March 8th Red Flag Collective” of Beijing.


IV. Training objectives


1. Major of Dance Performance


Adhering to the development orientation of “achieving distinctive sports with the advantages of art” and aiming at the deep integration of art and sports, cultivate the high-quality application-oriented talents with high artistic accomplishment, solid basic knowledge and professional skills and certain practical innovation abilities who can engage in dance performances as well as teaching, training and choreography related to dance performances in various professional performing arts groups, colleges and clubs.


2. Experimental Class of Choreography


Cultivate the high-quality application-oriented talents required by the society with good artistic literacy and comprehensive creative abilities, solid dance knowledge and skills, dance performance and creative expertise and strong spirit of cooperation and innovation who can adapt to the work in art groups, colleges, cultural institutions and enterprises.


3. Dance


Cultivate the versatile talents with good moral character, high artistic literacy, solid basic knowledge of dance theory and basic skills of dance major, good dance theory research abilities, basic teaching abilities and certain international cultural exchange abilities who can engage in dance research, teaching, planning and other related work in various social cultural organizations, professional literary and artistic groups, colleges, and professional clubs.


4. Experimental Class of Ice Dance


Cultivate the versatile talents with high artistic accomplishment, solid theoretical knowledge and outstanding professional skills of ice dance and good athletic abilities who can engage in ice dance training, teaching, competition and management in sports teams, colleges, clubs and other related departments.
